Certification Chairman’s Message                                    June 2009

To all Arizona Officials,

Being the certifying official I have been keeping busy.  It has taken a while, but all of the officials, who have completed the necessary paperwork, have received their I.D. Badges and pins.  Thus far, we have 123 certified officials.  About 75 percent of these are newly certified officials.  Many have several years of coaching, volunteer or competitive experience.  It is very important that the experienced officials mentor the new officials.  Our education chairman will be scheduling track and field clinics.  It is important that all officials attend these clinics.  This is a good way to review the rules and ask questions about rules that are new or not clear.

There are local and national meets needing certified officials.  By working meets, in various locations of our great nation, you will gain much more knowledge of how to officiate efficiently.  Personally, this has helped my officiating.  For this reason, the USATF National Certifying Committee requires officials to work two national USATF meets, each Olympiad, to qualify as a master official or maintain the master rating.

Make sure you maintain a track and field resume of all of your college and USATF meets.  Be sure to have the date, meet name and location, position you worked, and the name and phone number of the supervising official or meet director.  I need this information to accurately rate you and to contact the supervising official.

All of the association and new officials need to complete their meet practicum sign-off form and return it with their resume before they can advance to the national level.

Be sure to contact me and David Palmquist anytime you have a address, email, and/or phone number change.  This is very important so you can be contacted of any rules updates, track meets, or receive invitations from the  National USATF Officials Committee.  So far, I have had two certification badges returned due to address changes.  It is costly and a waste of my time.
